Let a brooch change the line of your jacket
If you have a brooch at home, hold it beside your jacket before pinning it in the usual spot. A small change of position can draw your eye along a different line.

Start with the line of the jacket
You put on your jacket and fasten the button. A small space on the lapel catches your eye. How would the brooch in your jewellery box look there? You can explore the idea without pinning it. Start by holding the brooch beside the lapel with its pin closed.
Imagine an elongated brooch: held parallel to the lapel, it may follow the jacket’s line; held at a slight angle, it can introduce another direction. A round brooch beside an angular lapel creates a different relationship. These are starting points for looking at the shape you own, rather than rules to follow.
Move it while keeping the other details
Hold the brooch near the shoulder for one version, then lower on the lapel for another. Keep the jacket button and your earrings unchanged. You are comparing placement, not two different outfits. The higher position may draw your eye towards your face, while the lower one may bring attention to the front of the jacket. Notice what happens in your own mirror.
Before fastening it, consider the jacket fabric and the brooch’s weight separately. Read the garment’s care information first; avoid putting a pin through delicate fabric just for an experiment. If you are unsure about suitability, comparing the positions while holding the brooch beside the fabric is enough.
Two positions, one sentence
For today’s small experiment, choose two positions and look at each for a few seconds. Ask whether you prefer following the lapel’s line or adding a new direction. Neither has to be more correct. You are deciding how you want this jacket to look today.
Keep a short note: “I like this brooch at a slight angle on this jacket.” Revisit that thought when you hold it beside a different jacket. Placement then becomes something you choose in relation to the garment, using a piece you already own.
